The Gold Standard of Cardiovascular Fitness

VO2 Max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise — it’s one of the strongest predictors of long-term health and athletic potential.

Find Your Exact Training Zones

Stop relying on generic heart rate formulas. Your VO2 Max test reveals your precise Zone 2 threshold, VT1, and VT2 — the data you need to train at exactly the right intensity for fat burning, endurance, or peak performance.

Track Real Progress Over Time

A higher VO2 Max means a fitter, more resilient cardiovascular system. Retest every 8–12 weeks to see measurable improvement and validate that your training program is actually working.

A Longevity Biomarker

Research shows that VO2 Max is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality. Knowing where you stand gives you a clear, science-backed target for improving your healthspan — not just your performance.

Watch Your Performance Metrics Live

During your test, you’ll see your key performance indicators updating in real time on our dashboard — giving you and our team an immediate window into your physiology.

VO2

Oxygen Consumption

Measured in ml/kg/min — the core indicator of your aerobic capacity and how efficiently your body utilizes oxygen.

HR

Heart Rate

Tracks beats per minute in real time, helping identify your ventilatory thresholds and personalized training zones.

Pwr

Power Output

Displays your target power in watts, correlating physical effort with oxygen demand at each test stage.

FeO2

Exhaled Oxygen

The fraction of oxygen in your exhaled air — a direct measure of how much oxygen your muscles are extracting.

Rf

Respiratory Frequency

Your breaths per minute, indicating respiratory efficiency and when breathing becomes a limiting factor.

What to Expect During Your VO2 Max Test

The entire appointment takes about 20 minutes. Here’s a step-by-step look at the process from preparation to results.

01

Before Your Test

A little preparation goes a long way toward accurate results. In the 48 hours leading up to your test, avoid strenuous exercise. On test day, skip caffeine and heavy meals. Wear comfortable athletic clothing.

  • Avoid intense exercise for 48 hours beforehand
  • No caffeine on test day — it elevates heart rate
  • Skip heavy meals before arriving
  • No fasting required (unlike RMR testing)
  • Try our free VO2 Max Calculator for a baseline estimate

02

During the Test

Your test starts with a 5-minute warm-up. Then, every 45–60 seconds, we progressively increase the intensity until you reach your maximum effort. You’ll wear the VO2 Master analyzer to monitor oxygen consumption while we track your heart rate and power output.

In Vancouver, we test on an assault bike. In Toronto, we use a treadmill following the Bruce Protocol.

Within 1–2 hours of your test, you’ll receive a comprehensive report via email. It includes your VO2 Max score, ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2), personalized heart rate training zones, and detailed breakdowns of your aerobic and anaerobic capacity.

You can also schedule a follow-up appointment with a specialist to review your results in depth.

VO2 Max Testing FAQ

What is VO2 Max?
VO2 Max (maximal oxygen uptake) is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise, measured in ml/kg/min. It’s the gold standard for assessing cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. A higher VO2 Max means your heart, lungs, and muscles work more efficiently together.
How long does the VO2 Max test take?
The entire appointment is approximately 20 minutes, including a 5-minute warm-up, the progressive test itself (typically 8–12 minutes), and a brief cooldown. Results are emailed within 1–2 hours.
Do I need to fast before the test?
No fasting is required for a VO2 Max test. However, we recommend avoiding heavy meals and caffeine on the day of your test, as these can affect your heart rate and results. If you’re also doing an RMR test, fasting is required for that portion.
What equipment do you use?
We use the VO2 Master Analyzer for tubeless VO2 Max testing — no hoses or carts. In Vancouver, testing is on an assault bike. In Toronto, we use a treadmill following the Bruce Protocol. Both deliver medical-grade accuracy.
What’s included in my report?
Your report includes your VO2 Max score, ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2), five personalized heart rate training zones, peak power output, maximum heart rate, tidal volume, respiratory frequency, and a detailed explanation of each metric. View a sample report →
Who should get a VO2 Max test?
Anyone looking to understand and improve their fitness — from weekend joggers to competitive athletes. It’s particularly valuable for endurance athletes wanting to optimize training zones, individuals tracking cardiovascular health for longevity, and anyone curious about their true fitness level beyond smartwatch estimates.
How often should I retest?
We recommend retesting every 8–12 weeks if you’re actively training. This gives your body enough time to show measurable improvement. Many clients pair VO2 Max testing with regular DEXA scans for a complete picture of fitness progress.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No referral is needed. Anyone can book directly at bodystats.ca/appointments. No prescription or physician order is required for any of our tests.
