I had discussed with my GP about getting a bone density scan because there is a history of osteoporosis in the family. Since I did not have the appropriate risk factors (yet), Medicare would not pay for it such a test is not part of the benefits package of my extended medical from work. I checked a few places and a DEXA scan would cost anywhere from $250- $350. In my opinion, the medical system has it wrong – it should pay for preventative procedures (such as knowing your bone density and body composition) as a way to mitigate other costly health issues later.
My friend had done a DEXA at BodyStats and recommended them to me. She warned that it is a “no frills” transaction, but I was looking for a baseline anyways. I read through previous reviews and the owner seems to take every comment seriously. Feedback, adjustments and improvements are made each time. This dedication made me curious to support this business.
Overall, I had a great experience at BodyStats. I received reminders and tips before the appointment. The technician was pleasant and helpful. A recording was played during the 6 minute scan, which gave valuable information. The results were emailed to me quickly, with good detail. I plan to review the results more carefully with my GP and build a progress plan.
The only reason I knocked off a star is – as many other reviewers have pointed out – the area where BodyStats is located is rather sketchy. The room is small so there is no place to wait inside. For my next scan, I plan to arrive at a more precise time so I don’t have to keep company with the ruffians outside.
I sincerely hope this business succeeds because 1) they make these types of fitness tests accessible to everyone; 2) perhaps they can move to a better location soon.
BodyStats is proof that scans of this type can be provided to everyone at a reasonable price so our BC medical system should embrace these innovations in preventative care more readily
