DEXA Scan & VO₂ Max FAQ

Clinical-grade accuracy without clinical pricing

Is a DEXA scan covered by OHIP?

No. DEXA body composition scans used for fitness, longevity, or health tracking are not covered by OHIP. OHIP may cover body composition scans for specific medical conditions when ordered by a physician, but private DEXA body composition scans are paid out-of-pocket.

Can I wear metal during my DEXA scan?

Yes. Metal is allowed, but you must wear the same metal for every scan to keep your results consistent and accurate. If you do wear metal, it’s highly important to wear the same items for every scan. Changes in jewelry or metal between scans can slightly affect your results and make comparisons less accurate.

Is a DEXA scan worth getting?

Yes. A DEXA scan is considered the gold standard for measuring body fat, lean muscle mass, visceral fat, and bone mass. Unlike a scale or smart device, it provides precise data that helps track real health progress over time.

How long does a DEXA scan take?

The scan itself takes only 3–6 minutes. Your full appointment is about 10–15 minutes. If you’re doing all three tests (DEXA + VO2 Max + RMR), plan for about 1 hour.

Do I need to fast or prepare before my appointment?

We recommend not eating for 2–3 hours before your scan for consistent results. For the RMR test, fasting is especially important. Wear shorts and a t-shirt and avoid heavy metal jewelry. Water is fine.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to book?

No referral needed. Anyone can book directly at bodystats.ca/ultra_book/. No prescription or physician order is required for any of our tests.

We had a great experience at BodyStats Gastown. The location is small but cozy, and our technician, Daniel, was knowledgeable, professional, and wonderful throughout the entire appointment. He made both of us feel very comfortable during the scans and testing. Have you ever wondered how many calories your body burns while doing absolutely nothing, how accurate the VO₂ max estimate on your Garmin really is, or what your actual body composition looks like? BodyStats can answer all of those questions with their Air Bike VO₂ Max, DEXA Scan, and RMR Test package. The package is currently 50% off, which makes it very affordable for the amount of useful information you receive. Our reports were emailed to us right away. You can interpret the results yourself, use AI to help explain them, or book a consultation with BodyStats. Overall, the experience was excellent, the concept is great, and the insights were genuinely helpful. Highly recommended!

Small room, but I’m not there to do much else other than get a dexa scan. It’s locked until the appointment which is good. The area is only sketchy if you’re pompous, lots of good cafe’s to sit at if you get there early. The guy working there was nice and straight to the point. It took less than 10 minutes from me in and out the door and I got my results instantly. The only thing I wish had happened is someone sanitizing the dexa platform after someone else used it, I don’t like the idea of laying somewhere someone else did. Will do another one in a year!
