A scale can’t tell you if you lost fat or muscle. DEXA can.
We pulled the most impressive body composition changes from our DEXA database — all real, anonymized results. Here are the Top 10 leaderboards for Fat Loss and Muscle Gain, split by male and female.
Female Fat Loss

#1 (40s) lost 42.8 lb of fat in 286 days. #4 lost 24.9 lb of fat while gaining 12.0 lb lean — her scale only dropped ~13 lb. The 40s claim five of the ten spots.

Client Spotlight: Eric’s Bulk
Eric (#6 on the male muscle gain board) gave us permission to share his transformation. 175 lb at 13.9% body fat → 211 lb in 256 days. Deep in a bulk and the scan proves it — 10.2 lb of new lean mass. He was chasing the 1000 lb club, focused on his main three lifts, and the DEXA tracked every pound of progress. Cut incoming.
“Tracking progress with real data can be a huge motivator. At the time, I was working toward becoming a 1000 lb club member, so I was focused on my main three lifts, and that approach led to surprisingly fast muscle gain. Seeing that reflected in my scans made the progress feel real and kept me motivated to keep pushing.”

Client Spotlight: Esteban’s Cut
Esteban (#9 on the male fat loss board) gave us permission to share his transformation. He started his fitness journey at 309 lbs, dropped to 209 at his lowest, and used DEXA to track the final stretch. Over 5 months of scans: 248 lb at 23.9% body fat → 222 lb at 17.1% BF. That’s 21.3 lb of pure fat lost while preserving his lean mass. Visceral fat dropped from 536g to 352g.
“Before coming in and doing everything I started out at 309 lbs and my lowest I dropped to 209 lbs.”

What the Data Tells Us
Recomposition is common — clients across all four boards lost fat and gained muscle simultaneously. Age isn’t a barrier — 40s and 50s show up on every leaderboard. The scale misses the story — some of the biggest changes here barely moved body weight.
Gaining weight can make you leaner. Multiple clients — especially women — put on 10, 20, even 29 lb and came out with equal or lower body fat percentage. The scale would say they’re going backwards. The scan says otherwise.
Update: Our Top 10 Respond
After publishing this article, we reached out to every client who made our leaderboards. The response blew us away — almost everyone said yes, and several shared their stories in their own words. Here’s what they had to say.
Brendan — 221 to 186 lb in 13 Months
Brendan made the male fat loss board by dropping 24.8 lb of pure fat over 13 months. His body fat went from 22.7% to 13.6%, and his visceral fat cut in half — from 487g down to 205g. Four DEXA scans tracked every stage of his cut, and the progression is textbook: steady fat loss while keeping his lean mass largely intact.
He sent us before and after photos along with his permission — the kind of side-by-side that shows what the numbers look like in real life.

Nora — The Visceral Fat Victory
Nora is the #1 entry on the female fat loss board — 26.0 lb of fat lost in 6 months, taking her from 187 lb down to 150. But the number she was most excited about? Visceral fat: 525g to 268g, nearly cut in half. That’s the dangerous fat wrapped around your organs, and it dropped 49% in six months.
“I was super happy with my results so far, especially my visceral fat. Now I’m working towards building my muscle back up — that was the only change I wasn’t super pumped about since I was still weight training regularly. Excited to see what happens when I get my next scan in June.”
— Nora, age 44

Emma — Lifting Heavy, Busting Myths
Emma lost 22.7 lb of fat while gaining 1.7 lb of lean mass in 6 months — going from 147 lb at 33% body fat to 126 lb at 20.4%. Her visceral fat went from 438g down to 143g. She found BodyStats near the end of her transformation and wishes she’d started tracking earlier. Her message to other women considering lifting heavy?
“So many people think that as a woman you’ll get ‘bulky’ lifting — haha, I wish! — and that you can’t gain muscle while losing fat, so it’s cool to show otherwise.”
— Emma, age 42
Emma asked to be credited by first name and age only — no photos, no last name. But her DEXA scan after tells the story: 20.4% body fat and more lean mass than when she started, at age 42.

Matt — 22.7 lb of Fat Gone in 3 Months
Matt, age 51, had one of the fastest fat loss results in our database: 22.7 lb of fat in just 3 months. He went from 205 lb at 30.6% body fat down to 179 lb at 22.3%. His visceral fat — the metabolically dangerous kind — dropped from 845g to 423g, a 50% reduction.
“This was a nice email to receive on a Monday morning. I’ll see you in 3 months for my next scan.”
— Matt, age 51

Allen — “I’d Swap the Marble Counters”
Allen, age 40, is a 5-time scanner — and he’s still going. From his first DEXA in August 2025 to his latest in April 2026, he’s lost 31.2 lb of fat and dropped his body fat from 32.1% to 21.9%. His visceral fat went from 829g to 366g. He’s already in the post as Male Fat Loss #2, but his scans have continued since then — and his latest numbers are even better than what the leaderboard shows.
“I’d gladly swap the marble counters and complimentary drinks for something I can access once a month or two and get an accurate bead on what I’m doing. Like you said — the data doesn’t lie.”
— Allen, age 40
Kevin — The Post-Baby Comeback
Kevin, age 33, gained 10.7 lb of lean mass in 5 months — a bounce back after losing a significant amount of weight in the first four months after his son was born. He went from 163 lb to 177 lb, and his lean mass jumped from 139.8 lb to 150.5 lb. The scale went up 14 lb, but the scan shows it was almost entirely muscle.
“It was a huge bounce back from losing a ton of weight the first 4 months after my son was born.”

Kerstin — The Full Recomp
Kerstin, age 45, pulled off one of the cleanest body recompositions on our boards: gained 8.8 lb of lean mass while losing 12.8 lb of fat in 5 months. Body fat went from 32.6% down to 25.8%. Her visceral fat was cut in half — 612g to 300g. The scale barely moved (173 lb to 169 lb), which is exactly why DEXA matters. A bathroom scale would have said “lost 4 lb.” The scan says she rebuilt her entire body composition.
