Our Story

I lost 10 pounds. Eight of them were muscle.

Founder Eric inside the original BodyStats studio at 316 Carrall Street, Gastown, Vancouver — Eric, after months of training.

“It started on an airplane. At 215 pounds. I just wanted to be strong for my family.”

01

The Motivation

I was about to get married. We’d been together almost ten years, and years before, I’d promised her that if we ever got married, I’d be in shape. The day I proposed, I was sitting at almost 215 pounds. The flight there was rough — the seat belt was tight, it hurt to sit on the airplane seat, I could barely breathe. And all I could think about was that if we actually got together and built a family, I wasn’t sure I’d be strong enough to support us. I wasn’t sure if I could do tasks, or play with the kids. I just wanted to be strong for my family.

I’d gotten into shape before. But I was much older than I was the last time, and my body wasn’t like it was when I was younger. I’d get sore more often. I’d recover slower. The things that used to work didn’t quite work anymore. To close that gap, I wanted to use technology.

I just wanted to be strong for my family.
02

The Discovery

That’s when I found out about DEXA scans. And I realized how crazy it is — to be able to know exactly how much lean mass and muscle mass you actually have. You don’t have to guess anymore. You don’t have to wonder if what you’re doing is working or not. You just know.

03

The First Number — 36%

I remember my first scan. I got 36%. And I remember not feeling upset, not feeling unhappy — I remember feeling extremely motivated. Because I now had the data to make improvements. I knew where I was, and I knew I was about to make a real change in my body.

Not upset. Not unhappy. Extremely motivated.
04

The Early Win

After the first two months — eating 1,200 calories a day, 180 grams of protein every single day, burning 500 to 1,000 calories a day, weightlifting three times a week — I lost 15 pounds of fat on my second scan. And I’ll always remember how happy I was when I found that out.

Two months. 15 pounds of fat. Gone.
05

The Wall

Fast forward to my fifth and sixth month. I was still doing the same thing. Except this time, when I’d lost another 10 pounds, I felt horrible. I felt unable to do anything. I felt like I’d hit a wall. And my scan showed me exactly that. I had lost exactly 10 pounds — but I had actually lost 8 pounds of muscle, and only 2 pounds of fat. And that is the moment I realized exactly how invaluable this is. How all my efforts for those previous two months amounted to almost nothing. It amounted to damaging my own body, in fact. Making my health worse.

10 pounds lost. 8 of them were muscle.
06

The Mission

And that is when I wanted to start BodyStats. Because I felt that this technology should have been available to everybody. That everybody should be able to do this scan. Everybody should have access to this.

And that’s why we opened in Gastown, on Carrall Street. This is where it started.

DEXA · Gold Standard

Hologic Horizon W DEXA Scan

What it is: A medical-grade Hologic Horizon W scan that maps fat mass, lean muscle and bone density region by region — the same technology hospitals use for clinical body composition assessment.

Why it matters: Bathroom scales and BIA devices guess. DEXA measures. You see exactly where muscle and fat sit, plus visceral fat and bone density baselines you can track for life.

Who it’s for: Anyone serious about fat loss, recomposition, post-injury rehab, or longevity tracking. First-timers and returning athletes alike.

VO2 · Cardio Ceiling

VO2 Master Test on the Assault Bike

What it is: A medical-grade VO2 Master analyzer paired with an Assault AirBike measures the maximum oxygen your body can use under load — the single best predictor of cardiovascular fitness and longevity.

Why it matters: VO2 max correlates more strongly with all-cause mortality than almost any other lab number. You leave with personalized heart-rate training zones grounded in real data, not formulas.

Who it’s for: Endurance athletes, hybrid lifters, masters runners, and anyone who wants to train smarter — or simply know where they stand.

Resting metabolic rate breath analysis test at BodyStats Vancouver studio in Gastown
RMR · Metabolic Truth

Resting Metabolic Rate (Breath Analysis)

What it is: A short breath analysis test that measures the exact calories your body burns at rest — your true metabolic baseline, not a generic equation.

Why it matters: Online TDEE calculators can be off by 300–500 calories a day. RMR replaces guesswork with a number you can build a real nutrition plan around.

Who it’s for: Anyone cutting, bulking, plateauing, or recovering metabolic function after years of dieting. Pairs especially well with DEXA.

The original BodyStats Vancouver studio at 316 Carrall Street in Gastown
A Second Origin Story

About 316 Carrall.

The address has its own story. I’d been looking at commercial real estate when this property came on the market in 2024 — the previous owner had passed away, the heirs were settling the estate, and it listed for roughly half the price of anything comparable. The lowest-cost commercial space in Vancouver at the time.

I bought it before I knew what would go inside. The plan came after the keys did — and once it did, it was clear: this was where BodyStats would start. Six months of permits and build-out. The first scans ran in 2025.

It’s not a clinic, and it’s not a spa. It’s a purpose-built body composition studio in the heart of Gastown — and it exists because someone had to settle an estate, and someone else was looking for the right place to begin.

What Our Clients Say

Trusted across Vancouver.

★★★★★

“I send every new client here before we build a program. The Hologic scan plus RMR gives me a real starting point instead of guessing from a scale. Eric explains the numbers in a way clients actually understand — that’s rare.”

Mara K.Strength Coach · Mount Pleasant
★★★★★

“Booked the VO2 max before my spring marathon block. Walked out with proper training zones and a number I’d been chasing for years. The Assault bike test is brutal in the best way. Quick, honest, no upsell.”

Devin T.Trail Runner · Kitsilano
★★★★★

“Third scan in eighteen months. The dashboard makes it easy to see what’s actually changing — visceral fat down, lean mass up. This is the only health metric I trust more than my own training log.”

Priya S.Product Manager · Yaletown
★★★★★

“I’d been curious about DEXA for ages but assumed it’d be a whole referral, doctor, insurance thing. Booked online on a Tuesday, scanned on Saturday morning, had answers by lunch. The Gastown studio felt nothing like a clinic.”

Jordan M.First-Time Client · Commercial Drive

FAQ

Answers, before you book.

How accurate is a DEXA scan compared to other body fat methods?
DEXA is the clinical gold standard. Our Hologic Horizon W has a margin of error around 1–2% for body fat and is reproducible to a fraction of a percent on repeat scans — meaningfully better than calipers, BIA scales, or InBody machines, which can swing 5% or more depending on hydration and time of day. That’s why DEXA is the method used in research, hospitals, and elite sport. If you’ve been frustrated by inconsistent numbers from a smart scale, DEXA is the answer. See pricing →
How long does a scan take at the Gastown studio?
The DEXA scan itself runs under 10 minutes. With check-in, the result walkthrough, and time to ask questions, plan on about 30 minutes door-to-door at 316 Carrall. RMR adds roughly 20 minutes; VO2 max adds 25–30. Most clients combine two tests in a single 60-minute visit and walk out with their full report the same day. Book your slot →
Is a DEXA scan safe? How much radiation is involved?
A full-body DEXA scan delivers roughly 0.001–0.005 mSv of radiation — about the same as a transatlantic flight, and a tiny fraction of a chest X-ray. It’s safe for repeat use. We do not scan during pregnancy. If you have a pacemaker, recent contrast imaging, or an unusual medical history, message us first at hello@bodystats.ca and we’ll confirm fit before you book.
How should I prep for my appointment?
Show up well-hydrated and in regular workout clothes — no metal (zippers, underwire, big buckles) on your DEXA outfit. For RMR, fast for at least four hours and skip caffeine that morning; we want a true resting baseline. For VO2 max, treat it like training: light meal two hours prior, hydrated, and ready to push. We’ll remind you of all of this in your booking confirmation email.
How often should I get scanned?
For most people, every 3–6 months is the sweet spot — long enough to see meaningful change in lean mass, fat distribution, and visceral fat, but frequent enough to course-correct before a plateau hardens. Athletes in active phases sometimes scan every 8–12 weeks. Annual scans are still useful for longevity tracking. Repeat clients save with our 3-Test Package — fully transferable, never expires.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. That’s a big part of why BodyStats exists. In B.C., body composition scans like DEXA, VO2 and RMR are not covered by MSP and don’t require a physician’s order. You book directly, you pay a flat rate, you own your results. Many clients choose to share their report with their GP, naturopath, or coach afterwards — your data, your call.
How much does it cost?
We publish every price openly. No memberships, no upsells, no “consultation fees.” Single-test pricing, combo bundles (DEXA + RMR or DEXA + VO2), and the transferable 3-Test Package are all listed on our pricing page. The 3-Test Package is the same flat rate whether you use it solo or split it across friends or family.
Can I combine DEXA, VO2 and RMR in the same visit?
Yes — and most regulars do. The Gastown studio is set up so you can run DEXA, RMR, and a VO2 max test back-to-back in roughly an hour. We’ll sequence the order so the RMR (which needs a true resting baseline) happens before the VO2 (which definitely will not leave you resting). One visit, three gold-standard tests, complete metabolic picture. Book a combo →
What do I actually walk out with?
A printed and digital report card with your full body composition breakdown — fat mass, lean mass and bone density by region, visceral fat score, and a Z-score showing where you sit against your peer group. VO2 reports include personalized heart-rate training zones. RMR reports include your true daily caloric baseline. Everything also lives in your private BodyStats Dashboard so you can track trends across every future scan.
